It all started with a bucket of carrots—or so they thought.
Meet Grout and Mortar, two adventurous construction bunnies on a mission to rebuild hope, one burrow at a time. After a big hurricane hits Florida's Gulf Coast, the determined duo hops into action, ready to help bunny families who’ve lost their homes. But when a mysterious bucket of what looks like carrots leads them into a human construction zone, they discover tools, teamwork, and tile... and a whole new way to build stronger burrows!
With curiosity, courage, and just a hint of bunny mischief, Grout and Mortar learn valuable lessons from two kindhearted humans, Mark and Kait. Along the way, young readers explore themes of resilience, community rebuilding, and the power of learning from others.
Perfect for kids ages 4–8, this heartwarming and humorous tale blends post-storm recovery with construction fun, making it an inspiring read for budding builders, bunny lovers, and anyone who believes in helping others.

Our story
Marcos Gleffe is a proud father and blue-collar American who has worked in the tile industry for 13 years. Born and raised in Chicago, he moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2022 to help fill the need for tradesmen. Marcos recently received a Presidential Pardon for his nonviolent protest on January 6, 2021, at the United States Capitol.
Kaitlynn Black is a soon-to-be mum and novelist who moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2024 to restore her 1978 Baba 30’ sailboat, NIM. After hurricane Helene and Milton’s destruction, she decided to learn how to lay tile with Marcos.
Through working together and helping their community recover from a destructive hurricane season, the idea of Grout and Mortar sprang to life.
Meet Grout & Mortar
“Kids love knowing that Grout & Mortar are real bunnies!”
Grout and Mortar are the two curious, floppy-eared helpers we bring along on tile projects—especially in homes with children. We adopted them from Space Coast Bunnies, a wonderful nonprofit bunny rescue on Florida’s Space Coast. We noticed that while kids are always fascinated by what we do, they sometimes feel too shy to ask questions or get involved. That’s where Grout and Mortar come in! These gentle, friendly bunnies help kids feel more at ease and excited to learn. Whether they’re hopping around nearby or getting gentle pets during a break, Grout and Mortar spark curiosity and connection—making our workdays a little more magical for everyone.
